3 Fall Outfit Formulas for Days When the Weather Can’t Decide
You know those fall mornings. You leave the house and it’s chilly enough that you’re convinced summer is officially over. By lunchtime, you’re wondering why you wore a sweater. Then the sun goes down and suddenly you’re freezing again.
Welcome to transitional dressing.
This is the time of year when I don’t want one perfect fall outfit. I want layers I can add, remove, tie around my shoulders, toss in the car, and put back on later. And I definitely don’t want to buy an entirely new wardrobe just because the calendar says fall.
So instead of thinking about individual pieces, I use outfit formulas. Here are three of my favorites for those days when the weather simply cannot make up its mind.
Formula 1: Great Jeans + Lightweight Top + Interesting Layer
This might be the easiest fall outfit formula I know. Start with jeans you love, add a lightweight top, then let the third piece make the outfit.
The formula: Denim + lightweight knit or tee + cardigan/jacket + easy shoe.
The secret is keeping the base layer light. Try the Ribbed V-Neck Knit Top in Oatmeal with the Lux Retro Wide Leg Jeans, or pair the Studded Barrel Leg Jeans with a simple tee and a lightweight jacket.
If your jeans have more volume—think barrel, flare or wide-leg—try a top that sits a little closer to the body underneath your layer. You don’t necessarily need something tight. You simply want enough shape that you’re not creating volume everywhere at once.
And this is where the third piece gets to be fun: an embroidered cardigan, a cropped denim jacket, or something with texture that makes jeans and a basic top feel like you.
Formula 2: Dress + Fall Layer + Boots
Before you pack away your dresses, try this. One of my favorite things about transitional dressing is figuring out how to get another season out of something I already own.
The formula: Dress + cardigan/jacket + boot.
As temperatures continue dropping: dress + fitted tee or turtleneck underneath + tights + boots.
A denim or chambray dress is especially good for this. The Marisa Tiered Chambray Dress can move from warmer days into fall with a cardigan and ankle boot. Another easy option is The Sunday Stroll Denim Shirt Dress, which works beautifully with a fitted layer underneath once temperatures drop.
Pay attention to where your layers end. A shorter jacket or cardigan can give a relaxed dress shape, while a longer cardigan creates a softer line. Neither is right or wrong. Look at the proportions, not the size on the tag.
Formula 3: Graphic Sweatshirt + Polished Bottom + Intentional Accessory
This one may be the most House of Caelo formula of all, because I love a sweatshirt. I also don’t think a sweatshirt has to automatically mean leggings and sneakers.
The formula: Graphic sweatshirt + polished bottom + intentional accessory.
Try a Moon Tribe sweatshirt with flare or dark-wash jeans and ankle boots, or pair a graphic sweatshirt with a wide-leg trouser and loafer. Add a beautiful bag such as the Westlyn Woven Vegan Leather Crossbody and suddenly the whole outfit feels intentional.
The trick is contrast: soft + structured, relaxed + polished, graphic + classic. If everything you’re wearing is extremely casual, the outfit feels casual. Combine something cozy with something more structured and it changes everything.
What Should You Wear When It’s 60 Degrees?
Wear something you can take off. Around 60 degrees, I usually want jeans or full-length pants, a tee or lightweight knit, a cardigan, vest or lightweight jacket, and a closed-toe shoe.
The mistake is dressing entirely for the temperature you feel when you leave the house. If the day is going to warm up, build the outfit for the warmer part of the day and bring the layer you need for the cooler hours.
What About 70 Degrees During the Day and 50s at Night?
This is peak “weather can’t decide” territory. Start lighter than you think. Try a tee + jeans + cardigan, a dress + denim jacket, a tank + wide-leg pants + lightweight sweater over your shoulders, or a graphic tee + jeans + vest.
The key is making sure your base outfit looks complete without the layer. Then you don’t feel half-dressed when you take it off.
How Do You Layer Without Looking Bulky?
If your outer layer is oversized or chunky, keep what’s underneath lighter. If you’re wearing a voluminous bottom, create a little more definition on top. Balance is what makes relaxed clothes look intentional.
The Fall Outfit Formula I Use Most
When I don’t know what to wear, I come back to this:
Base + Bottom + Third Piece + Shoe + One Thing With Personality.
You don’t need ten interesting things happening at once. Sometimes one is enough.
Shop Your Closet Before You Shop Fall
Before buying another sweater, spend ten minutes looking at what you already own. Pull out three bottoms you actually wear, three lightweight tops, and three layers. That’s potentially 27 different combinations before you’ve bought a thing.
Then ask: What’s actually missing?
Maybe it’s not another sweater. Maybe it’s the cardigan that makes five tops work. Maybe it’s one really great pair of jeans. Maybe it’s the bag or necklace that makes your basics feel less basic.
That’s how I want us to think about fall shopping at House of Caelo. Not: What else can I buy? But: What could I add that makes more of what I already own work?
Fall Dressing Doesn’t Need to Be Complicated
You don’t need to predict exactly what the temperature will be at 3:17 p.m. You just need options. Start with a base that works on its own. Add a layer. Pay attention to proportion. Mix something comfortable with something polished. And always leave a little room for something that simply feels like you.
FAQ
What should a woman wear in early fall?
Start with lightweight layers rather than heavy sweaters: jeans or trousers, a tee or light knit, and a removable cardigan, vest or jacket.
What should I wear when it’s 60 degrees?
Full-length pants or jeans, a lightweight top and a removable outer layer are a versatile combination. Closed-toe shoes such as sneakers, loafers or ankle boots transition easily into cooler weather.
How do I transition summer clothes into fall?
Keep wearing summer dresses, tees and tanks, but introduce fall layers and footwear. Add cardigans, lightweight jackets, fitted long-sleeve tees, boots and richer accessories.
How do I layer clothes without looking bulky?
Combine different fabric weights and balance proportions. Pair a chunky or oversized layer with a lighter base, or balance a wide-leg bottom with a more fitted top.
What are easy fall outfit formulas?
Three reliable combinations are jeans + lightweight top + cardigan or jacket, dress + fall layer + boots, and graphic sweatshirt + polished bottom + intentional accessory.
